Uplighting<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Uplighting places a light at the base of a feature and angles it upward. It’s the most-used technique in the trade, and it’s how you make a specimen tree, a column, or a building facade the focal point after dark. Spotlights and in-ground well lights are the go-to fixtures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beam spread and placement control the look, and the spread comes from the lamp rather than the housing. Moonlighting is one of the most requested effects because it lights a space without any obvious source of glare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grazing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Grazing places a light close to a surface and aims it up (or down) at a steep angle so the beam skims across the face rather than hitting it straight on. That low angle catches every ridge and joint, which is why grazing is the technique for textured surfaces: stone walls, brick, bark, and architectural detail. Point a light directly at the same wall and the texture flattens out; graze it and the surface comes alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wall washing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Wall washing is the opposite of grazing. Instead of raking the surface, you spread an even, uniform layer of light across it, using a wash or spread fixture set back from the base. Wall washing suits smooth or lightly textured surfaces where the goal is a clean, consistent glow rather than dramatic shadow. These two are about shape. Silhouetting<\/strong> places the light behind an object and aims it at the wall or surface behind, so the object reads as a dark shape against a lit backdrop. It suits plants, trellises, and sculptures with a strong outline. Shadowing<\/strong> is the softer cousin: place the light in front of the feature, low and aimed toward a wall behind it, and the feature casts a soft shadow onto that surface. The mistakes that separate amateur from professional<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The most common failure is over-lighting: too many fixtures at too high an output, so the property looks flat and washed out instead of layered. A professional plan uses restraint, lighting key features and letting the spaces between them fall into shadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
